Phone pole

Here's the view out of the train window. Very artsy, no? Reminds me of a photo Ansel Adams would have taken. Of course, Ansel would have thrown it away immediately. That's where old Ansel and I part company. I publish everything. Taken with the exclusive RAZR-cam.

The Loyal Readers are back! It was a lonesome weekend around here, even though I had my trusty Loyal Pets, at least one of whom just loves to hang around with me. I read a little, worked on an electronics project (only destroyed one LED!), watched a movie (Boeing Boeing, about which more later), watched several episodes of SpongeBob, and . . . umm . . . must have done a few other things. Oh yeah, I got gas in two cars and figured out why the check engine light was on in the Suburban (not good news, but I'm waiting for it to happen again before I get excited about it). Also made and ate my meals. And slept. Et cetera.

Anyway. It's nice to have them back. Loyal Reader Number One did very well in his performance, which made it a great capstone to his pre-college piano career. Congrats, LRN1!

Boeing Boeing was an interesting movie. It's a comedy from the sixties, starring Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis(!). Tony Curtis is a guy who has three girlfriends (fiancees, actually) who are stewardesses from different airlines and don't know about each other - their schedules just happen to work out to put them in Paris on different days every week. They all get new schedules on newer, faster airplanes, and start showing up at the same time. The interesting thing about the movie is that Jerry Lewis is in his post-Dean Martin days, and he's actually funny. No moronic slapstick - just surprisingly good humor. I had no idea he could be good. Anyway, I don't necessarily recommend the movie, but it was mildly amusing.

Time for Home Evening. See you tomorrow.

I have to say that was the most exciting baseball game I have ever been to. I saw it all...10 people being ejected after a one team vs. another fight, a toddler running in the middle of the field during one inning, and 5 exploding bats. It was awesome.

At Fairlane

Here are Loyal Readers Numbers One and Two at Fairlane. Great Art indeed.

I guess some Morrowlife controversies are more controversial than others. Yesterday's secession talk just didn't generate much talk. I suppose that question must have been settled back in '65. That's 1865 for any of you Loyal Readers not quite up on your history. 1965 was a little less exciting.

Anyway. It's Loyal Reader Departure Eve. They'll be gone for about three days. I'll sure miss 'em. Good luck, Loyal Reader Number One! I'm sure they'll all have a good time. LRN4's sister is coming up to Riverside from San Diego to visit while they're that far south.

I'll be lonesome while they're gone, but don't worry about me too much. I'll have the dog, the snake, and the fish to keep me company. Not to mention the plants. That's quite a crowd.

No controversy today. My Loyal Readers will just have to stew over the weekend. See you on Monday.

X8

Here's Henry Ford's X8 engine. They say he got it pretty well developed, but ultimately didn't end up marketing it. It turned out to be easier to get the flathead V8 working right. Good idea. Part of my famous Machinery series.

Well. Some Loyal Readers have been helpfully pointing out typos in yesterday's post. I can't find any - you might want to have another look. If you think I misspelled "canoeing," though, you're wrong. Check this out.

Man, is the air smoky! I don't know how far away all those fires are, but we're certainly smelling them. And breathing them, of course. It looks like Los Angeles around here.

Spoke with Loyal Reader Number Three on the phone this evening. He's thinking of getting contacts and wanted a little input from me, since I wore them for many years. Good luck with your decision, LRN3!

Loyal Reader Number Twenty-Four mentioned in yesterday's comments that she wouldn't follow the Hungry Man diet, but she would "... pick up the book, and flip through a couple pages." No need for regrets, LRN24, as long as you actually buy the book. Use it for bird cage lining, for all I care.

I'll have to look in to the calorie situation on that diet one of these fine days. Maybe it would actually work. In the meantime, my day job is secure.

Today's Morrowlife controversy: do you think we should try this here in Lardville? Sounds like a great idea to me.

The Loyal Readers are heading to Southern California Saturday morning for Loyal Reader Number One's piano performance at the big music conference in Riverside. I can't go, unfortunately. I'll have to buy the CD. Or at least download it illegally. Good luck, LRN1!

See you tomorrow.

Brakeman

Here's Loyal Reader Number Two trying to get a huge steam locomotive stopped in time. Doesn't look too promising. Part of my famous Machinery series.

No interest in the math/fuel/engine/Jeep discussion yesterday. I guess my Loyal Readers just aren't ready for the blog to turn into a scientific automotive journal. Which is a good thing, since I have nothing else to say in that direction. At least not right now. Maybe I'll try again later. I could always look at the economics of hybrids.

Another pretty day - they all are. Except when we're canoeing. Then there's a freak lightning storm. The Loyal Readers had people over to swim today, as they have every Wednesday this summer. The water has been at about 82 degrees for a couple of weeks now. That's chilly when you first get in, but comfortable a few seconds afterward. They've been getting plenty of friends to come over, which is nice.

Speaking of the pool, I need this. It's not too late to send me one for my birthday.

Nothing else new. We'll make our decision this evening on the October cruise. I don't think Loyal Reader Number Four is too hot on the idea, so I don't think we'll be going. We'll know within a couple of hours.

Well, the votes are in. It looks like the bizarre lady singing about how much she loves her bathroom is the winner in the Worst Bathroom Song Ever controversy. Or is she the loser? Dunno. I just hope she was paid well for singing that song, which was an advertisement for a plumbing company. The other one was intended for the employees of a gas station chain.

Today's controversy: I've invented a new diet that I think is really going to take off. I'm calling it the Hungry Man diet. The idea is that you eat a simple, healthy breakfast; a small TV dinner for lunch; and a Hungry Man TV dinner for . . . umm . . . dinner. I haven't done all the math yet, but I think it will work. I'll be even more famous than that Jared guy. Maybe even Jenny Craig! The controversial question for my Loyal Readers is this: would you try this diet? Better yet, would you buy my upcoming book on this subject?

See you tomorrow.

I've already tried a modified version of the Hungry Man Diet. Instead of a healthy breakfast, I ate donuts and Mountain Dew. I can't say I lost any weight during the week or so I ate like that, but maybe losing the donuts would be the key.

I have another diet suggestion. I cal it the Gas Station Diet. You can get hotdogs, nachos, sandwiches, burritos, or pizza for every meal. Most of those items can be had with free drinks like Powerade or Gatorade. It's cheap and it works great!

Also, there is a typo in the last sentence.

There is also a typo in my post. Oops.

Hah! I found both typos!
On the "friends" link, it doesn't look like that dog thinks its owner is its friend if it's about to be thrown in the pool. Poor critter.
As far as the diets go, I thought the Gas Station diet was a great way to almost kill yourself...
Anyway, I think I'll be starting a diet consisting solely of this. Assuming they taste okay.
Also - on the Jeeps - looked like a pretty done deal to me. No real savings. The real solution is to build a nuclear power plant in your back yard and then buy an electric car using the money you make selling power back to the grid. I think I'll go find some plans online.

Edison's gadget

Here's one of Thomas Edison's gadgets. I can't remember what it does. Any Loyal Readers care to venture a guess? Part of both my Machinery and Workbench series.

Missed the train, drove the Honda. The repairs seem to be great! I can shift into third without grinding! And there's no new grease on the interior! Amazing.

I listened to a podcast on diesel engines this afternoon. They were interviewing a guy from Bosch, one of the companies that manufactures a lot of diesel components. When they asked him whether it was still worth it to spend the extra money for a diesel vehicle, given the current outrageous price of diesel fuel and the premium prices they charge for the engines, he was vague and talked instead about how great diesel cars are for the earth. Not a good sign.

So I decided to figure it out for myself. I checked out which 2008 cars are available with diesel engines. Turns out there still aren't too many, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee does have several engines available, including a diesel. They charge a reasonable $1655 for the diesel above their 4.7 liter non-hemi V8 (the diesel's only available in an upmarket model, which has a standard V8). Their website says the diesel gets 17 MPG in the city, and Yahoo's auto website told me the V8 version gets 14 city MPG. Assuming gas/diesel fuel remain at $4.50/$5.50 and that you drive 15,000 miles/year, the gas engine will end up costing you $24107 in fuel after 5 years, and the diesel will cost $25919 (including the initial cost of the engine), for a net loss of $1812. It never catches up - at 10 years the difference is $1970 in favor of the gas engine.

Maybe my numbers aren't reasonable, though. After all, diesel engines are renowned for their great gas mileage, so maybe Jeep's numbers are just too low. So I created a fictional car with an engine that costs $5000 extra (not out of line for luxury diesel sedans) but gets 22 miles per gallon. After 5 years, the diesel engine saves you $357, given the constraints documented above. At 10 years, the diesel's advantage is $5714. At the two-year point, though, the diesel owner is $2857 in the hole.

Bottom line: the Jeep diesel is no deal, but if you can find a diesel car that gets substantially better mileage than its gasoline counterpart and you plan to keep the car for an unusually long time (substantially longer than five years), it's definitely better to spend the extra money on the diesel. For the most part, though, the oil companies are taking all the money. As usual.

Of course, I didn't look at the differences in resale values, which may or may not give the advantage to the diesel. It depends on the future relative price of fuels, the unpredictable relative reliability of the two engine types (although diesels do have a reputation for durability, 1980's GM models notwithstanding), and lots of other variables. Feel lucky, punk? Well, do ya?

Anyway. Thanks to my Loyal Readers for their insightful comments on the beer commercial controversy. The consensus seems to be that making the commercial was bad for Kirby's career path. Tsk tsk, Kirb. And do as he says, Loyal Readers, not as he gets paid to pretend to do.

Today's controversy: want some good advice? Keep your bathrooms clean, men. Why, you ask? Because ladies love clean bathrooms. Controversial question: which song is lamer?

Time to do something else. See you tomorrow.

Odd Buddha

Here's a very strange Buddha. I don't exactly remember where it came from - probably a restaurant, based on its surroundings. Part of my famous Statue series. Courtesy of my junky famous RAZR cam.

Well, we're back from The Island. Had a great time. The boys had fun in the canoes, in spite of the weather, which had a part in the group declaring victory a little prematurely. Loyal Reader Number Four and I had a good time doing the logistics and everyone went home tired and happy.

Back to work today - it was busy, busy, busy. Which is good.

Our friends the Smiths have invited LRN4 and I to go on a cruise with them later this year. They're going to the Mexican Riviera - Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, and a couple of points in between. The cruise leaves from San Diego and takes nine days. I'm tempted. We need to decide in a day or two, as they'll be buying their tickets this week. The price certainly seems favorable right now. Maybe it's another casualty of the gas-crunched travel industry. And every other industry, come to think of it.

No controversy today. That beer commercial one really took it out of me. I'll try again tomorrow.

No time for any more. See you tomorrow.

I agree that the beer commercial is a very difficult choice. I think it all comes down to a single question - is it right to cater to the sinful nature of man? I know this may seem as a bit of a stretch, but if it's okay for Kirby to be in this commercial, or for the Marriott to serve alcohol and pay-per-view porn, then it's okay for me to open a casino. Hard choices - glad that I don't have to make them.

Tinsmith's bench

Here's the tinsmith's workbench at Greenfield Village. This may have been the subject of a blog picture before, but at least it's a new picture. Great Art can get to be repetitive. Great Art can get to be repetitive. Part of my famous Workbench series.

Sad news - the person hit by the train yesterday did not survive. They're saying it was an emotionally or possibly mentally disturbed person. Very sad.

We're off on the canoeing trip tomorrow. Wish us luck! Or at least safety. Or something. Fortunately, we don't leave until mid-day, so we can spend the morning getting ready. Since we don't appear to have made any efforts to get ready up to this point.

Today's controversy: should this guy have done the beer commercial? I say probably not. Bad for the image as an LDS actor. On the other hand, I wonder if his image was permanently damaged by The Singles Second Ward anyway. No additional harm done, no?

No post tomorrow or Friday. We'll be on the island. Sorry about the shock to the collective system, but I'll make up for it with plenty of interesting discussion on Monday.

See you then.

Mauled reader

Here's the followup to that bear statue picture the other day. Loyal Reader Number Two looks to be in pretty bad straits. Don't worry, Loyal Readers - we eventually got him out of there. Part of my statue series.

Tough night on the train. The train ahead of us hit somebody and had to stop for the police and ambulance response, of course. Then there was all the paperwork. We're running over an hour late so far. The good news is that we're moving again. Sigh.

Otherwise a good day. The heat appears to have broken, at least in the South Bay. Loyal Reader Number Four told me it was still pretty warm at home, which is how I like it.

No news from the Honda dealer. I'm as nervous as a cat. I'm supposed to get it back tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed, Loyal Readers.

Speaking of which, how nervous are cats? They've always seemed like quite sensible animals to me.

Yesterday's controversy appears to have generated some vigorous debate. About as vigorous as it gets around here, anyway. Some think we should get the tank back. Not to mention washing it for us. The reason being that they were the ones to get it all dirty by burying it. Others think we ought to leave it there, what with the environmental cleanup involved.

I'm still searching for some middle ground. Maybe we should demand it back and then refuse to accept it when it gets here. We don't want to get too obnoxious, though. They might ask for their statue back.

Today's controversy: Political news. And more political news. Controversial question: which is more pathetic?

See you tomorrow.

Lard

Here's a big barrel full of the stuff we use a lot of here in Lardville. Photographed in the WWII "homefront" exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum. I have no idea why they needed to collect lard, but apparently the uses were practically endless. Lardville must have been quite the popular town back then.

Great weekend, it being the Second Happiest Day of the Year and all. Several Loyal Readers were here, and I spoke to various others on the phone. What a great day.

Saturday was fine too. We swam again - the pool was a couple degrees warmer than Friday. Just a little chill when you first jumped in and then perfectly comfortable. Did just a little bit of work on things around the house and then spent a whole lot of time working on my digital mousebot. Not much joy there. I can't seem to get a reliable signal out of the IR emitters/sensors. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but the output doesn't appear to be a function of how much light is hitting the sensors, which kind of negates the whole purpose of the thing. The odd thing is that they worked okay in analog mode. Maybe I need to experiment with the voltages. Yeah, that's the ticket. In the meantime, the project is in its box back in the garage.

Speaking of the garage, the Honda finally went to the dealer this morning for its new transmission. Cross your fingers, Loyal Readers. I feel like a member of the family is in for a heart transplant. Except the heart would be more like the engine. Maybe it's in for a liver transplant. Or maybe its lungs. Opinions?

In any case, it's supposed to be ready on Wednesday afternoon, and I'm anxious.

Another question: is it appropriate to pray for your car's well-being? I'm saying yes, based on Alma 34:24-25.

Controversy of the day: Should we ask for it back? I say yes.

Lame controversy, I know. Maybe a better one tomorrow. See you then.

Stupid blogger ate my comment! I say that the Honda is in for a hip replacement and that we should demand our tank back - after they've washed it! Frenchmen. Who else would push a tank in a hole, bury it, forget about it, and then find it 50 years later?

Tue Jun 17, 10:52:00 AM

Anonymous Tom said...

Given what the cost of diesel is these days, I say let them keep it! Besides if we do ask for it back they would probably bill us for the recovery (since we left it there) and any environmental clean up necessary because they shoved the silly thing in a hole and covered it up. Maybe they could turn it into a monument to the people who died liberating the town they found it in?

Tue Jun 17, 12:17:00 PM

Blogger Paul said...

I vote that the Honda is in for a bypass. If the engine is the heart, maybe the transmission is an artery of some kind. Controversy wise, they should give it back after cleaning and repairing it. They should also have to pay damages for the time that the tank wasn't in service because they shoved it in a hole and buried it. Paul's Home for Abandoned Tanks seems a good home for it...

Feeding time

Here are a few giraffes grabbing a quick snack at the Detroit Zoo. The general public can feed them there, which may be fun. I don't know, though.

Off Friday today. We got a few things done, including fixing the leaf blower, cleaning off the workbench, buying stuff at Office Max (incorrectly reported yesterday as Office Depot), checking out Loyal Reader Number One's video-camera-on-a-board, and swimming. Also lots of relaxation. Oh, and I worked for a couple of hours too.

Tomorrow's list is equally long. I want to wash the Miata, design and breadboard the digital mousebot, and . . . umm . . . a few other things. Swim, certainly. It's been hot and the pool feels good right now.

Anyway. No controversy again today. Look for something really big on Monday. See you then.

Swimming bear

Here's a polar bear at the Detroit Zoo. As mentioned a couple days ago, these guys absolutely love it in Detroit. Can't imagine why.

Went swimming this evening. Well, to be absolutely technically correct, the Loyal Readers went swimming and I went wading. Then we all went jacuzzifying. Swimming tomorrow for me, when it's over a hundred degrees. Saturday too, for the same reasons.

We ended up not going camping this weekend. We just felt too pressured to spend the weekend away. Plus, it's going to be outrageously hot. So we're staying home and swimming.

We also have to go to Office Depot. It's a brand-new store and we got some coupons for free stuff. Gotta use 'em. And Father's Day is as good a time as any, no?

No new controversy today. I'm still hoping to hear from additional Loyal Readers on appropriate uses for the Brown Ray. Thanks to Loyal Reader Number Four for her humane suggestion.

Off Friday tomorrow. See you then.

Poor fighters

Here's the reason the South lost the Civil War. They marched too close to each other. Who can fight when you can't even get your arms up? Picture taken at Greenfield Village during the annual Civil War reenactment.

Well. I finally got yesterday's post up. Today. Lousy Blogger. Sorry to all my enraged Loyal Readers. Your evening was ruined, I know.

The family went to the annual ward summer picnic in the park tonight. Loyal Reader Number Four made a delicious pasta salad with chicken and mandarin oranges. Quite tasty. It was nice to visit with friends, as always.

I'm just about finished with my cost account management class. Tomorrow is the final exam, for which there are four hours budgeted. Yikes. I think I need to spend a little time studying tonight.

Today's Morrowlife controversy: should we be developing this extreme weapon? My vote: definitely. I'd like to see it used against those kids who can't keep their pants up. Wait a minute - maybe I wouldn't like to see that after all. Let's pick a different group. Any suggestions?

Bear head

Here's a bear head. Taken at the Detroit Zoo, which has quite a nice polar bear exhibit. Which is appropriate, given that polar bears are quite at home there for much of the year. Part of my famous Statue series. (Note: picture publishing is not working. Again. Doggone Blogger. Come back Real Soon Now and look at the cool picture as soon as they fix their doggone system.)

Beautiful, sunny day today. It was warm too. Quite warm, in fact. It's supposed to be in the 90's for the next week or so, except for Friday, when it will be in the hundreds. The pool's nice and warm.

Went to the first day of a three-day class on cost account management. Valuable stuff for my current job, and possibly useful for the future software business too. Although I hope to never get big enough to require cost account management. Or badges. If we make badges it will be strictly for grins. Not that there's too much fun in making badges, but you never know.

Anyway, this is two weeks of training in a row. Too much.

Speaking of the business, we're not really getting anywhere right now. I've been concentrating on my little electronics projects, which haven't had a place in the Business Plan. Not that there's one of those. I hope we never need that either. Anyway, maybe those projects will turn out to be useful too. I hope so. In the meantime, Loyal Reader Number Three reports that he's starting to work on something to run on the PC/Xbox platform. Good luck, LRN3!

Loyal Readers Numbers One and Two did a little bit of canoeing tonight at Young Men. They're preparing for the High Adventure trip next week. They went to Dos Reis, which is where we've decided to camp this Thursday through Saturday. Which we're looking forward to. Need to find some horseshoes, since that's about all they have to do there, other than hang out in the trailer and walk around the loop.

Anyway. Today's controversy: Should the Prince have paid the interest? I say no. He's technically not the one to run up the debt, so he doesn't technically owe it. But it was a nice gesture anyway.

See you tomorrow.

Ford's '42

Here's a truly rare car, for two reasons. First, it's a 1942 Ford, of which there weren't all that many made, since war production started shortly after the 1942 model year began. Second, this happens to be another one of Henry Ford's personal cars. In fact, I believe it was his last personal car. Still can't accuse him of extravagance. I guess he still liked any color, as long as it was black. Like his Model T, this one has various non-production features, including a holder in the back seat for a large bottle of water. Picture taken in the garage at Fairlane.

Short Shrift tonight. Home Evening is over and it's already time for bed.

Spent part of the weekend thinking about new Arduino/electronics projects. Here's what's currently on the drawing board (or at least in the thinking cap):
  • Finish my Arduino-controlled light-seeking mouse

  • Get my unused USB print server to work as an Ethernet interface to the Arduino

  • Get my new LCD display to work with the Arduino (Morrowlife comment counter and/or displayer?)

  • Make a nice box for my new LCD display

  • Get Loyal Reader Number One's tiny video-camera-on-a-board working
Lots to do.

Great weekend, by the way. It was nonstop Happiest Day of the Year celebration. It was for me, anyway. I received several lovely gifts, including the above-mentioned LCD screen, a couple of beautiful ties, a great Hawaiian shirt, a new camp chair, and a cool case for my iPod. Also a little money, all of which will probably be spent at Sparkfun. Which is where the LCD came from.

The other side effect of the Happiest Day was that I got to talk to my mom and both of my brothers on the phone. They're all doing fine - thanks for asking. Although one of the brothers was on his way to get a towed-away rental car back and the other one was waiting for one side of a downed power wire to be removed from his car and the other side to stop burning up his lawn.

Otherwise, everyone is fine.

No time for controversy today, except to say that Loyal Reader Number Three has very aptly answered Loyal Reader Number Four's concerns on the unequivocal results of my informal survey. Thanks very much, LRN3.

Time for bed. See you tomorrow.

Wow. Your brothers haven't been having much luck with cars, apparently.

Frog dance

Here's Loyal Reader Number Two performing some sort of strange ritualistic dance on a frog. Very scary. Taken at the Detroit Zoo. Part of my statue series.

What a beautiful Friday! It was a work day, and there was plenty of it for me to do, but things are going great.

There was a moderate amount of interest in yesterday's controversy. Inputs appear to be unanimous in favor of the correct (Over) toilet paper orientation, which impels me to ask the obvious question: who is putting all those toilet paper rolls in the Under position?

I did notice that Loyal Reader Number Sixteen's toilet paper was Under during our recent visit there. We had such a nice time that I was reluctant to point out this obvious problem, but I did notice it.

Who else is suffering under this odious burden?

This is the last post before the Happiest Day of the Year! That's right, my birthday is on Sunday. Extravagant gifts are still being accepted. Not to worry, though. If I don't get any extravagant gifts, I'll just buy some of my own.

The trouble is that I'm having a hard time thinking of things to put on my wish list. I always just buy everything I want, so it's pretty tough to come up with a gift. Suggestions are welcome.

Oh, and don't worry about it if you miss the Happiest Day of the Year. The Second Happiest Day of the Year is the following Sunday - Father's Day! What a great month.

Today's controversy: Super-convenient foods. Dumb? Or just stupid? Would you buy a pre-dunked Oreo?

Speaking of which, is this is as lazy as it gets? Or is there something even lazier?

See you Monday.

I think hiring a nanny to feed your child through a tube might be considered slightly lazier.

I'm not sure your research data is unbiased--as all the responders came from the same household of Overs. When we get some response outside of the family, I might believe your conclusion.

Melissa says that her whole family uses the "over" format. On a lazier note, I have a friend who has several of those lazy food products in his house. He doesn't like to cook, but doesn't mind nuking stuff. He says that the convenience foods are pretty good, but I haven't tried most of them. His TP is "Over", though.

Eagle Tavern

Here's the sign for the Eagle Tavern in Greenfield Village. It used to be somewhere else in Michigan - Marshall, maybe. Now it serves family-style lunches to family-style tourists. Based on condition, I have my doubts that this is the original sign.

Extreme Short Shrift again tonight. I had my Thursday night meeting.

Last day of class. Yahoo. I didn't go back to the office today afterwards, after last night's marathon whine fest from my problem child. No thank you for that. It's nice to be home.

Daily dose of controversy: please provide your opinion on this very important issue. Personally, I'm in the "over" camp.

Real post tomorrow. See you then.

Over is right, under is heresy. Upon this topic there can be no disagreement.

Third. Also, it's too bad that Kevin can't count in his list of solutions for whiners, but I guess that would make me a complainer!

I suspect Kevin was so distracted by his whining employees that he just ran out of content.

Control panel

Here's another in my famous Machinery series. Very cool. From Fairlane, of course.

Short Shrift tonight. Spent way too much time at work. In a class, mostly. A class I didn't want to attend. And still don't. And I have to go back tomorrow. The rest of the time was spent listening to one of my problem employees whine. Sigh.

A brighter day tomorrow. See you then.

Camp Wahoo

Here's one of my favorite campsites of all time. Sadly, it's not actually out-of-doors; it's in the Henry Ford Museum. That certainly doesn't diminish its coolness, though. I'm thinking of getting one of those Camp Wahoo signs for our trailer. This picture may also get posted on the HRVA.

Nothing to talk about today. Worked hard and came home. I'm spending the next two days in a training class. I'm not really looking forward to it, but managers have to go, so I might as well get it out of the way.

No controversies today either. I will note in passing that the Associated Press has apparently decided to declare Mr. Obama the winner of the Democrat nomination race, and everybody else on their side has piled onto that bandwagon. I'm not sure who appointed the AP as their nominating committee, but I suppose they're as legitimate (and as closely tied in) as anybody else. I see Mr. Obama as being every bit as serious a candidate as George McGovern and Michael Dukakis. Best of luck to him on that.

But no controversies here. Oh, I will also mention that some people seem to be glad to see Mrs. Clinton go.

No controversies, though.

See you tomorrow.

Rush Limbaugh's comments on Barack Obama were very interesting. I honestly find politics somewhat depressing.

Ammeter

Here's Henry Ford's ammeter. Part of my famous machinery series. This one was taken in the Fairlane power house in Dearborn.

Busy weekend. We had stake conference, so I had Saturday meetings at 4:00 and 7:00, and then the Sunday general session at 10:00. Plus, Loyal Reader Number One graduated from Seminary at 3:30.

Loyal Reader Number Two also had a few friends over to swim, play games, eat dinner, and watch a movie Saturday afternoon and evening. They all seem to have had lots of fun.

Oh, and Loyal Readers Numbers Five, Six, and Twelve came over on Saturday afternoon. I saw them for only about half an hour, sadly. Fortunately, they're coming back again next weekend.

Let's see, did anything else happen? LRN2 and I worked on the sprinklers a little on Saturday - he had inadvertently hit one with the mower and he needed to learn how to replace them on his own. I think he's got the skillz now. Yo.

We picked up the truck Saturday morning. The new (and free, of course) brakes and rotors seem fine. I need to tow the trailer soon to confirm they won't overheat and fade this time.

I also published a brief and relatively uninteresting report of our March trip to Big Sur over on the HRVA. Check it out! If you enjoy brief and uninteresting reports, that is.

There's still more to publish. We went camping at Caswell State Park in April, so that needs to get on the HRVA. There have also been a few software/hardware projects recently that ought to get on Gardenville. Such as the BMP viewer (Mac software) and LRN1's Mac/Arduino Morrowlife comment counter. All of them have potential for further expansion, but I think they're already publishable.

We had another power outage at work late this afternoon. It only lasted a few minutes, but that was plenty to kill some hardware in the lab. I had to leave to catch the train, so I won't know how bad it was until tomorrow. Cross your fingers, Loyal Readers.

It's events like that that make me glad I have a laptop. My machine's display went down, but everything was still normal when the power came back up.

Let's see, gotta keep the Loyal Readers happy. Is there any controversy I can get involved in? Hmmm . . . can't think of any. The presidential contest went way beyond ludicrous for me a long time ago. I couldn't care less whose preacher is an idiot (answer: all of them except for Hillary's, who has no preacher and indeed no identifiable religious beliefs except when her husband is in trouble again - come to think of it, none of them have any identifiable religious beliefs unless they need a photo op - which makes me wonder what the heck Obama was thinking when he chose his particular vanity church - I can only conclude he has absolutely no sense of what the American people consider to be crazy talk) or how many delegates which candidate has or which grievance group supports who. I also have no interest in the ginned-up-by-the-press economy problems or the imaginary global warming crisis.

No, I guess I just have no controversial opinions to air today.

See you tomorrow.

On the topic of the controversy you linked to - an update released shortly after this news hit removed all the affiliate links and Inquisitor was shortly thereafter bought by Yahoo. Very interesting.
